This is because the flame cannot be seen; it is invisible to the human eye.&#8221; &#8211;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\" class=\"stk-highlight\"> <\/span><span style=\"color: #abb8c3;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Isabel \u00c1lava, Head of the Combustion Laboratory at IKERLAN.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-627b9ff\" data-block-id=\"627b9ff\"><style>.stk-627b9ff{height:30px !important}<\/style><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/isabel-%C3%A1lava-p%C3%A9rez-762754105\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isabel \u00c1lava<\/a> is a Senior Researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikerlan.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IKERLAN<\/a>, a technology center specializing in industrial digitization and technology transfer to companies, which is part of the Mondrag\u00f3n Group and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brta.eus\/eu\/hasiera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BRTA (Basque Research &amp; Technology Alliance)<\/a>. She currently heads the Combustion Laboratory and has more than 20 years of experience working at the company.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are fortunate to have the opportunity to speak with her so she can tell us how the collaboration between Grupo \u00c1lava and Ikerlan came about. They use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flir.es\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=emea.es.solutions.crsseg.t.iw.om.brand.search&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAy_CcBhBeEiwAcoMRHMBO-CXmLSTiBspu74HR3XFJcEK6--Z4fGbyjl0UmS4Ib8EKoCE73RoCqVAQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teledyne FLIR<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/grupoalava.rearmachine.com\/tech\/nuestra-tecnologia-y-el-volcan-de-la-palma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thermal imaging cameras<\/a> we provide not only to monitor temperatures, but also as a safety measure. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-db87f1e\" data-block-id=\"db87f1e\"><style>.stk-db87f1e .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}@media screen and (max-width:1023px){.stk-db87f1e .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}}<\/style><h6 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">What do you do at Ikerlan?<\/h6><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We focus on <strong>energy, combustion, and the design and development of <\/strong>efficient systems,<strong> <\/strong>heat transfer and optimization processes. Both <strong>for residential<\/strong> and <strong>industrial<\/strong> <strong>applications<\/strong>, in sectors such as <strong>heating and <\/strong><strong> cooking<\/strong>. We\u2019ve been working on combustion <strong>for over 20 years<\/strong> and have a laboratory that we opened in 2019; in addition to being designed to test and validate conventional gases and fuels, we built it specifically as a laboratory for 100% hydrogen. <strong>Green hydrogen<\/strong>, generated and produced from renewable energy sources, is one of the key technologies for decarbonizing the planet. We have the entire protocol, detection systems\u2026 That is primarily what we do in the combustion group, which is part of the mechanics unit.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have a fairly broad range of clients, and our core business right now is hydrogen. We\u2019re destroying the planet\u2026 Reducing <strong>CO2<\/strong> emissions by using <strong>hydrogen<\/strong> as <strong>a fuel<\/strong>, and developing solutions that don\u2019t exist today. There\u2019s no technology for hydrogen combustion, no hydrogen burners, and no systems to detect hydrogen. So, you could say we\u2019re at the cutting edge of <strong>technological development<\/strong>.    <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-bf7b9ba\" data-block-id=\"bf7b9ba\"><style>.stk-bf7b9ba .stk-block-heading__text{color:#0071ce !important}<\/style><h6 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\">It is one of the few laboratories in the country that allows hydrogen (H\u2082) to be burned in complete safety.<\/h6><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-dc0045b\" data-block-id=\"dc0045b\"><style>.stk-dc0045b .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}@media screen and (max-width:1023px){.stk-dc0045b .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}}<\/style><h6 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">HOW DID THE PARTNERSHIP WITH GRUPO \u00e1lava COME ABOUT?<\/h6><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve been working together for many years now, because one of the key technologies we use to monitor, design, develop, and validate the systems we optimize, improve, or design is <strong>infrared thermography<\/strong>. Knowing the temperatures inside the burner\u2014and whether the heat distribution is uniform or not\u2014is incredibly interesting. For us, it\u2019s a <strong>key tool<\/strong>, but especially so when we\u2019re talking about hydrogen, because it\u2019s invisible to the naked eye. We can see a natural gas flame, but not a hydrogen flame. So, the only way to detect it is through temperature, using infrared thermography. We\u2019re not only using the Teledyne FLIR thermal imaging cameras you provided us to monitor temperature, but also as a safety measure.     <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-8abf75b\" data-block-id=\"8abf75b\"><style>.stk-8abf75b .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}@media screen and (max-width:1023px){.stk-8abf75b .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}}<\/style><h6 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">How does GRUPO \u00c1lava&#8217;s solution benefit you?<\/h6><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It allows us to monitor flame temperatures\u2014specifically those of hydrogen\u2014 <strong>up to 2000\u00b0C<\/strong>, something that other versions of other cameras would not allow us to do. This technology is very useful to us. And while I\u2019m talking about hydrogen here, historically I could mention when we developed burners for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vision-artificial.es\/2022\/01\/03\/inspeccion-en-hornos-y-calderas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gas furnaces<\/a>, where you have to check whether the heat distribution inside the furnace is uniform. In short, there are countless problems that we solve with this technology.    <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-2ab0b4e\" data-block-id=\"2ab0b4e\"><style>.stk-2ab0b4e .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}@media screen and (max-width:1023px){.stk-2ab0b4e .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}}<\/style><h6 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">WHAT IS YOUR DAY-TO-DAY EXPERIENCE WITH THE PRODUCT?<\/h6><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We handle everything from design and product improvement to testing, validation, and even pre-certification testing. We are not a certification body, but we guarantee our clients that the product we have developed is ready for <strong>industrial-scale production<\/strong>. We use the tool on a daily basis, depending on where we are in the project\u2014whether it\u2019s design, validation, or, above all, validation of results.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need to have tools in the lab that allow us to validate the <strong>theoretical models<\/strong> we\u2019re using. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vision-artificial.es\/categoria\/camaras-termograficas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thermography is one of the basic tools<\/a>, along with other types of tools. In hydrogen combustion, it\u2019s essential to monitor temperatures because the flame isn\u2019t visible. You might be burning hydrogen, but since you can\u2019t see it, you run the risk of getting burned.    <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block stk-98c26e8\" data-block-id=\"98c26e8\"><style>.stk-98c26e8 .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}@media screen and (max-width:1023px){.stk-98c26e8 .stk-block-heading__text{font-size:14px !important}}<\/style><h6 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">How would you describe your experience with Grupo \u00c1lava?<\/h6><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Positive, approachable, and reliable<\/strong>. Whenever I have a technical issue, I give you a call, and you either try to resolve it for me or refer me to specialized centers or institutions that have dealt with the same problem.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from that, we occasionally request training courses. It\u2019s helpful when we purchase a product, because we have our own \u201cquirks\u201d when it comes to using the tool.
