Os raios X s\u00e3o irradiados para uma pequena \u00e1rea da amostra com um feixe de alta energia. Quando os \u00e1tomos da amostra absorvem os raios X, os electr\u00f5es dos \u00e1tomos s\u00e3o excitados e destitu\u00eddos de energia, provocando a emiss\u00e3o de raios X secund\u00e1rios, carater\u00edsticos de cada elemento. Os raios X fluorescentes emitidos s\u00e3o detectados e analisados para os elementos.
