Black Carbon Analyzers

Black carbon (Black Carbon(BC) is one of the most relevant components of atmospheric aerosols because of its impact on climate, air quality and human health.

Description

Accurate real-time black carbon measurement for climate, environmental and emissions studies.

Black carbon (BC) is one of the most relevant components of atmospheric aerosols due to its impact on climate, air quality and human health. Its origin is linked to incomplete combustion processes, such as diesel engines, biomass and industrial emissions. Accurate measurement of BC allows us to assess pollution sources, model climate effects and validate mitigation strategies.

At Álava Ingenieros, we work with Droplet Measurement Technologies to offer advanced black carbon analyzers such as the SP2 (Single Particle Soot Photometer) and the PAX (Photoacoustic Extinctiometer). These instruments allow real-time measurement of mass concentration, size, optical properties and coating of BC particles, without the need for filters or sampling artifacts.

Droplet solutions are ideal for atmospheric research, urban monitoring, visibility studies and emission control. Their high sensitivity, temporal resolution and compatibility with mobile or fixed platforms make them key tools for scientific networks, R&D laboratories and environmental assessment campaigns.

SP2 – Single Particle Soot Photometer

Direct measurement of black carbon in individual particles by laser incandescence.

Droplet Measurement Technologies’ SP2 measures black carbon in single particles with high resolution. It detects incandescence and scattering signals to characterize mass, size and coating. It is ideal for studies of emission sources, atmospheric transport and climate effects, with laboratory, field or aircraft operation capability.

Enriched content:

  • Detection by continuous laser incandescence.
  • Time resolution up to 25,000 particles/second.
  • Measurement of mass, size and BC coating.
  • Applications: weather, pollution, snow/ice, mobile emissions.

PAX – Black Carbon Photoacoustic

Simultaneous measurement of absorption and optical scattering to estimate black carbon concentration.

Droplet’s PAX allows real-time measurement of light absorption and scattering by aerosols, correlating absorption with black carbon concentration. Its compact, self-contained design makes it ideal for urban monitoring, visibility studies and emission control, without the need for filters.

Enriched content:

  • Direct measurement of absorption and scattering.
  • 1 second resolution, continuous operation.
  • Available in 870 nm, 405 nm and 532 nm.
  • Applications: air quality, visibility, biomass, industrial emissions.

Portable and mobile systems

Adaptable instrumentation for field campaigns, monitoring vehicles and aerial platforms.

Droplet analyzers can be integrated into vehicles, mobile stations or aircraft for dynamic black carbon studies. Their robustness, autonomy and connectivity allow measurements in real environments, including urban, rural or remote areas. They are ideal for scientific campaigns, environmental audits and model validation.

Enriched content:

  • Integration in mobile platforms and UAV.
  • Geolocated registration and remote control.
  • Compatible with scientific network protocols.
  • Applications: mobile surveys, satellite validation, urban monitoring.

Reference systems for certification and metrology

Reference instruments for calibration and traceability in black carbon measurement.

Droplet Measurement Technologies offers reference systems for calibration and certification laboratories. Their stability, sensitivity and international traceability allow instrument validation, multi-point comparisons and compliance with the most demanding standards in quality and atmospheric metrology.

Enriched content:

  • Minimum drift and high repeatability.
  • Certificates traceable to international standards.
  • Integration with multiparametric systems.
  • Applications: metrology, certification, technical validation.
