This type of testing is covered by international safety legislation as well as by vehicle safety assessment programs such as NCAP, EURO-NCAP and similar. In addition to the regulated tests, vehicle manufacturers use their own tests to evaluate and optimize the performance of vehicle restraint and passive safety systems.

Passive safety in automobiles has become an area of great interest and topicality.
