The Vaisala MHT410 combines direct measurement in oil without membrane and solid H₂ sensor with low cross-sensitivity, with patented HUMICAP® technology for water activity. All this with mechanical/EMC robustness and maintenance-free operation, making it the most reliable and robust technical solution on the market, compared to solutions that rely on membranes, pumps or sensors susceptible to drift and interference.
Differential characteristics:
- Direct measurement in oil and without membrane: The MHT410 measures hydrogen, moisture and temperature directly in transformer oil, without pumps, hoses or membranes. This eliminates common sources of error and drift (aging or fouling of membranes, leaks in sampling lines) and reduces the latency associated with the headspace method. In addition, by avoiding mechanical components, maintenance and failure points are drastically reduced.
- Solid H₂ (palladium-nickel) sensor with low cross-sensitivity: The hydrogen sensing element is a solid-state palladium-nickel film, requiring no maintenance or calibration and designed to operate in oil under pressure or vacuum and with <2% cross-sensitivity to typical transformer gases (CO₂, C₂H₂, C₂H₄, CO). This translates into reliable H₂ trends and fewer false alarms due to chemical interferences, may saturate, degrade or show spurious responses due to gas mixing; the MHT410’s robust technology reduces drift and does not deplete, thus requiring no replacement of the H₂ sensor.
- Moisture measurement in oil with HUMICAP® and stable temperature reading: Moisture is measured as water activity (aₙ/aw) and %RS with the HUMICAP® 180L2 sensor, offering typical accuracy ±2…±3 %RS and ~10 min response at 20 °C in oil. Temperature is measured with Pt1000 class F0.1, key to normalizing readings and evaluating thermal cycling.Measuring water activity directly in oil avoids unrepresentative ppm conversion errors when temperature and solubility change; this significantly improves diagnosis of dielectric strength loss risk.
- Multi-oil compatibility and SCADA integration: The MHT410 is compatible with mineral oil, natural esters, synthetic and silicone oil, extending its use in heterogeneous fleets. In addition, it has analog and digital outputs (Modbus/DNP3), which facilitates its incorporation into existing monitoring systems and substation synoptic panels.
