What is IEPE technology and why is it the most widely used?
The IEPE standard defines a type of piezoelectric accelerometer that incorporates the signal conditioning electronics (an amplifier or impedance converter) inside. When the piezoelectric crystal of the sensor is subjected to acceleration, it generates a high-impedance load signal, which is very susceptible to electromagnetic noise and interference from cable movement.
The electronics built into an IEPE sensor immediately converts this load into a much more robust and stable low-impedance voltage signal. This signal is transmitted through a standard two-wire coaxial cable, which simultaneously supplies the sensor with a constant excitation current from the data acquisition system.
