MEMS Accelerometers from LNS Dynamics and ASC: Accurate Measurement from 0 Hz
When applications demand the highest accuracy in low frequency and static (DC) measurements, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology is the undisputed solution. At Alava Ingenieros, we offer a complete selection of MEMS capacitive accelerometers from our reference partners, LNS Dynamics and ASC-Sensors, designed for the most challenging test environments.
Capacitive MEMS Technology: How does it work?
Unlike piezoelectric sensors (IEPE), which can only measure changes in acceleration (AC), MEMS accelerometers are built on a micromachined silicon structure. This structure consists of a seismic mass suspended by flexible springs between two fixed plates. Upon acceleration, the mass is displaced, causing a change in the electrical capacitance between the mass and the plates.
An integrated conditioning electronics detects this capacitance variation, which is directly proportional to the applied acceleration. This operating principle makes it possible to measure constant accelerations, such as gravity, and very low frequency vibrations, down to 0 Hz. For this reason, they are also known as DC or DC-response accelerometers.
Key Advantages of MEMS Accelerometers
MEMS technology offers unique capabilities:
- Response at 0 Hz (DC): They allow measurement of sustained accelerations and slow movements, such as tilt, dynamic analysis of vehicles or oscillations in civil engineering.
- High Thermal StabilityExcellent stability over a wide temperature range, ensuring reliable measurements under changing conditions.
- Ruggedness and Resistance: Their monolithic silicon design makes them extremely robust against impacts and overloads, making them the preferred choice for high impact tests such as crash tests.
- Low Noise Level: They offer exceptional resolution and low spectral noise, allowing very small accelerations to be detected with great clarity.
Typical Applications
The DC responsiveness of LNS Dynamics and ASC MEMS accelerometers makes them the perfect tool for automotive crash tests, structural health monitoring (SHM) in bridges and buildings, vibration analysis in railroads, flight tests in the aerospace industry, as well as in geotechnical and robotics applications.
