Air gap monitoring is primarily used in hydroelectric generating units. The generators in these units are characterized by their low rotational speed (60–333 rpm), large number of poles (100–18), and large rotor dimensions.

Online monitoring systems make it possible to detect anomalies at an early stage and plan corrective actions. Combining AirGap measurements with standard measurements (vibration, temperature, etc.) and correlating them with process variables (active power, reactive power, etc.) enables the early detection of failures.
