SWIR Cameras for Machine Vision

SWIR cameras allow your machine vision system to see through opaque materials. They detect moisture, check fill levels, and identify internal defects, ensuring unbeatable quality control.

SWIR (Short-Wave Infrared) machine vision operates in a wavelength range (typically 900 to 1700 nm) that is invisible to the human eye. Unlike thermography, which detects emitted heat, SWIR technology works with reflected light, revealing unique material properties that are impossible to capture with conventional cameras.

SWIR Cameras for Machine Vision

SWIR (Short-Wave Infrared) machine vision operates in a wavelength range (typically 900 to 1700 nm) that is invisible to the human eye. Unlike thermography, which detects emitted heat, SWIR technology works with reflected light, revealing unique material properties that are impossible to capture with conventional cameras.

The result is high-contrast, high-resolution images that allow us to “see through” certain materials and analyze their chemical composition.

Key Benefits of SWIR Imaging for Industry

  • Seeing through materials: Silicon and many opaque plastics become translucent in the SWIR spectrum. This allows for the inspection of the interior of electronic components or packaging without having to open them.
  • Moisture Detection: Water strongly absorbs SWIR light at specific wavelengths. This causes damp areas to appear very dark, allowing for the measurement of moisture levels or the detection of water where it shouldn’t be.
  • Material differentiation: Substances that appear identical in the visible spectrum (for example, sugar and salt) have completely different “signatures” in SWIR, allowing for their precise classification.
  • Fill Level Inspection: You can check the fill level of liquids or powders inside opaque plastic containers, completely ignoring any labels or markings on the outside.
  • Adverse conditions: SWIR light penetrates smoke, fog, or dust better than visible light, providing clear vision in harsh industrial environments.
