The central services of the University of Valladolid (UVA), which support all areas and departments of the university, have signed an agreement with Álava Ingenieros to procure a system from our partner HORIBA that incorporates RAMAN and AFM technologies and also enables TERS (Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy), while simultaneously combining both techniques.  

The system consists of a state-of-the-art confocal Raman microscope with high spectral resolution and new image processing technologies that make it even easier and faster to acquire Raman images, and a high-performance AFM microscope, which enables structural, mechanical, electrical, and magnetic characterizations at the nanoscale.Antonio Javier Zambrano.

“Both systems are coupled using a specially designed optical system that, together with the use of special tips developed by Horiba, allows for quick and easy TERS measurements, thereby providing chemical information about the samples at the nanoscale in a non-invasive and non-destructive manner, and with minimal sample preparation, in fields such as biology, chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, nanoparticles, and nanotechnology, etc.”Juan José Romero. For example, it has been possible to measure the Raman spectrum of carbon nanotubes in specific areas without destroying them, obtaining measurements on the order of the AFM tip size (approximately 10 nm).

Currently, Horiba is the manufacturer with the most advanced technology in this field, with more than 35 publications on the subject.
