New maintenance philosophies aim to optimize processes to achieve maximum availability and reliability at the lowest possible cost. Among all these philosophies, Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) stands out today.
The RCM maintains that whenever a failure mode is monitorable, the optimal maintenance strategy is Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM or PdM); if it is not possible to implement CBM, then fixed-interval or failure-based maintenance would be considered. It should be understood that “monitorable” means that it is technically possible to monitor the machine’s condition and that, from an economic standpoint, the investment is justified.
