The pharmaceutical industry is adopting new maintenance management models that have already proven successful in sectors such as power generation, oil and gas, process manufacturing, and others.

New maintenance philosophies aim to optimize processes to achieve maximum availability and reliability of production assets at minimum cost. Among all these philosophies, Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM [1]) stands out today. RCM maintains that whenever a machine can be monitored, the optimal maintenance strategy is condition-based maintenance (CBM or PdM); if it is not possible to apply CBM, then fixed-interval or failure-based maintenance would be considered. It should be understood that “monitorable” means that it is technically possible to monitor the machine’s condition and, from an economic standpoint, the investment is justified.
