This article analyzes the various maintenance strategies applicable to industrial assets.

The main purpose of these notes is to help industrial maintenance managers and coordinators successfully implement the right strategy for each asset and thereby achieve an optimal maintenance plan design.
The implementation of predictive maintenance strategies has yielded enormous savings for companies that have successfully applied the most appropriate strategies for each asset. However, most industrial facilities schedule maintenance only after a certain number of operating hours or when an unexpected breakdown occurs.
The maintenance management strategies we will analyze are:
- Regressive Maintenance
- Reactive Maintenance
- Preventive Maintenance
- Predictive Maintenance
- Proactive Maintenance
Predictive or Preventive Maintenance?
Scheduled maintenance based on a calendar or preventive maintenance (PM)
Preventive maintenance involves scheduling the replacement of machine components on a regular basis before they reach the end of their useful life. The frequency of maintenance interventions is based on theoretical calculations or estimates of the lifespan of components that fail according to patterns based on operating time.
Predictive Maintenance (PdM) or Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM)
Predictive or condition-based maintenance assesses the condition of machinery and recommends whether or not action should be taken, resulting in significant savings on maintenance costs.
[…] The maintenance manager is responsible for making the necessary adjustments to achieve a balance between reactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance. Although the percentages vary from one type of industrial plant to another, a general goal would be to have no more than 10% of interventions on critical machinery be reactive, approximately 35% be preventive, and the remainder (55%) be predictive.
