When faced with problems such as high vibration levels in machines or recurring component failures, dynamic analysis techniques allow us to identify the dynamic deformation patterns exhibited by a machine under normal operating conditions. In this way, by correctly understanding which vibration modes are being excited, we can develop computational models that allow us to modify certain parameters to ensure stable operation of the machine under analysis.

The analysis of Operational Deflection Shapes involves acquiring vibration spectra at multiple points on the machine structure using one or more fixed phase references. The relative motion between these points will reveal the deformation patterns present during operation.

In many cases, the analyst must understand the dynamic problem at hand even before beginning to take measurements. The selection of measurement points, as well as the areas of the structure that require special attention for a detailed analysis, are crucial to the success of the intervention.
