Although the maintenance department cannot do anything to improve the reliability achieved through the design, our mission will be to maintain that reliability by applying best maintenance practices.
The focus of modern maintenance is not so much on preventing machine breakdowns as it is on preventing the loss of machine functionality. This can only be achieved by maintaining machine availability, and this availability, in turn, can only be achieved by maintaining reliability.
The primary goal of maintenance today is not to reduce costs but to ensure that production operates at the plant’s maximum design capacity.
To assess the health of our machines, there is no doubt that we must use the technologies available today to monitor the health of our assets and diagnose any potential “ailments” they may develop.
At the same time, we must use the most appropriate approach so that we can intervene with the teams only when there is clear evidence of a need.
To achieve all of this, it is essential to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary both to properly use the tools and to effectively manage the maintenance program selected from among the various available approaches: RTF, PM, PdM, and PAM.
It is therefore necessary for companies to have an adequate training plan for their technicians so that they can effectively maintain the reliability of plant assets.
