PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Machine vision, a key player in the automotive industry

The Institute for Research in Design and Manufacturing (IDF) of the Polytechnic University of Valencia develops RD projects in design, manufacturing and automation, especially for the automotive industry.

In collaboration, we created an artificial vision system to improve the detection and monitoring of bodywork defects, used by manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen in their plants in Spain.

How we made it happen

Inspection tunnel

An automated inspection system (inspection tunnel) was designed and supplied to detect and monitor defects in car bodies.

The system included: a vision subsystem with cameras and advanced algorithms to identify defects, a mechanical Cartesian robot structure that supported and moved the cameras and lighting, and displays that showed the highlighted defects so that operators could repair them manually.

The image acquisition system was equipped with 32 high resolution BASLER CMOS digital cameras, capable of capturing 20 images per second and equipped with variable focal length and quality optics.

Each camera covered a part of the body with safety margins so as not to miss defects. The capture speed was adequate for in-line production and the cameras were connected to acquisition cards in a MATROX industrial PC.

The lighting subsystem used high-frequency fluorescent tubes mounted on 11 arcs that moved at constant speed over the body. Cameras, fixed on the Cartesian robot, captured images as the light arcs moved.

We not only supply and install the necessary hardware and software equipment, but also advise on the most suitable hardware architecture for the system.
