PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Early warning of volcanic activity

The project consisted of the installation and calibration of three seismic stations belonging to the National Volcanic Surveillance Seismic Network . Two of these stations were located on the island of Tenerife, in the municipalities of Realejos and Granadilla, and the third in Campo de Calatrava.

These stations functioned as early warning systems for volcanic activity and continuously provided data to the National Seismic Network for the detection and location of seismic activity throughout the national territory .

How we made it happen

Design. Installation. Configuration

Design of the electronics and housing, soundings, construction of the civil works, assembly of the electronics, installation, calibration of the sensors and configuration of the data acquisition and transmission system.

The installation consisted of these parts:

  • 3G-4G communication.
  • Powered by solar panels and battery.
  • Broadband (120s-100Hz) sounding sensor.
  • GPS time synchronization.
  • House to house the entire system including the sounding.

After designing the system, the civil work, fabrication and electronic configuration was carried out, together with the surveys and the installation and calibration of the sensors.

The sensors, Güralp Radian broadband seismographs, were installed in small diameter boreholes (100 mm), without anchors to allow a high inclination range. The sensor was placed in a PVC pipe, with the last meter in 80 mm diameter, filled with fine sand to ensure optimal contact with the rock.
