The importance of predictive maintenance in the cement industry

The cement industry faces challenges such as the need to maintain continuous and efficient production and to reduce operating costs. The implementation of predictive maintenance strategies makes it possible to anticipate equipment failures, optimize plant performance, and ensure the quality of the final product.

The cement industry is another sector where the monitoring of critical machinery has been most successfully developed.

Machinery monitoring in the cement sector is particularly interesting for the following reasons:

  • The machinery is concentrated in a small space, i.e., there is little dispersion of the machines, which facilitates their monitoring.
  • It is common to have excellent analysts in most cement manufacturing plants.
  • Many of the machines are already vibration monitored, as the manufacturers themselves install protection and monitoring systems, to which it is easy to add predictive diagnostic capabilities.
  • There are very critical single (non-duplicated) machines.
  • The type of machinery that lends itself well to vibration analysis, including slow speed machines.

The following are the critical points where it is advisable to sensor the machines in order to continuously monitor their status.

A failure in the power transmission chain that drives the cement kiln causes the plant to stop production. Motors and gearboxes are critical parts and must be monitored to anticipate any problems.

Cement mills are critical parts in the production chain of cement plants, for this reason, fixed sensors are usually mounted to carry their signal to a continuous measurement system.

Failure of the furnace fans can lead to dangerous situations when the temperature in the furnace goes out of control. Continuous measurement systems eliminate unexpected failures.

These machines are critical because of the need to transmit high power to rotate the furnaces.

Vertical axis machines where unbalances are frequent and due to the layout of the machine itself can excite resonance frequencies of the structure.
