OBJECTIVE
Ghubrah IWP, sustainable water solutions
As a consequence of its growing population and economic development, daily water demand in Oman has been growing by 2%-3% annually. Demand has increased markedly in central Muscat, and the Government of Oman has launched multiple IWPs to redirect the situation. Ghubrah Independent Water Project is being the first large-scale IWP in the river stream, Oman Power & Water Procurement Co (OPWP) initiated
a competitive bidding process in 2012. The shareholders were awarded the contract to build the plant and Muscat City Desalination Company (MCDC) was incorporated to undertake the project.
The plant was set up under a build, own, operate (BOO) scheme, with permission to operate beyond the 20-year term of the Water Purchase Agreement (WPA), extending it by WPA (according to OPWP) or by purchasing water on the market if there is the possibility at that time. The plant is based on SWRO technology and is one of the largest operating desalination plants in Oman. SWRO technology is a technology that has been implemented in numerous projects globally. The SWRO process extracts incoming water from the sea, putting it under pressure through semi-permeable RO Membranes to produce pure, high quality water.

HOW WE MADE IT HAPPEN
Integration of sensors supplied by equipment manufacturers
The solution provided consists of a continuous monitoring system for all critical equipment (either by size or type of plant) for the continuous operation of the desalination plant, including equipment such as seawater pumps and high pressure pumps.
The chosen system in addition to full machine diagnostic capabilities includes the integration of the processed vibration parameters into distributed control systems (DCS) and motor control systems (MCM) for monitoring and eventual triggering of the machines.
The scope of supply included the validation and integration of sensors supplied by equipment manufacturers, supply of monitoring modules mounted in cabinets ready for installation in the plant, engineering of the monitoring project, configuration of the monitoring systems and communications, FAT tests, validation of the installation and wiring (performed by others), SAT plant acceptance tests, training in the use of the system and finally adjustment of the alarms for the delivery of a 100% functional system to the customer.

Increased predictive monitoring
Remote diagnostic services of the monitored machines are being carried out from Preditec’s CMDT center, which allows for more predictive monitoring, improves the safety of plant personnel and is a step towards plant digitalization.
